# Guided Access not working

Why Guided Access will not start, will not end, or lets go: Apple's own limits, the reports on iOS 26, and the locks that hold through a restart.

Short answer: Guided Access is Apple's free way to keep an iPhone or iPad in one app for a while, and when it fails it is usually one of a few known things, fixed below. But it was built as a lock for a moment, not one that holds: a restart ends it. If you need a phone that stays locked, use a lock built for that.

## What Guided Access is, in Apple's words

Apple says Guided Access can "temporarily restrict your device to a single app", for a child using your device or for staying on a task. You turn it on in Settings › Accessibility › Guided Access, open the app, and triple-click the side button (the top button on iPad, the Home button on older models) to start. To pause or end it, triple-click again and enter the Guided Access passcode, or use Face ID or Touch ID if you allowed them. Session settings can turn off touch in parts of the screen, the buttons, the keyboard, motion, and set a time limit.

One limit Apple states plainly: "Crash Detection and Emergency Services aren't available while using Guided Access."

## It will not start

- Start it inside an app. A triple-click from Settings or the Home Screen does nothing; an answer in Apple's community puts it simply: "Guided Access will only work inside of an app"
- Check Settings › Accessibility › Accessibility Shortcut: if more than one shortcut is set, the triple-click asks which one, and Guided Access must be ticked there
- On iOS 26, people report "Guided Access Unavailable" for 30 to 60 minutes after ending a session (iPhone 15, iOS 26.5 and 26.6). An Apple engineer replied: "This doesn't sound right, and it's likely you are encountering a bug." Another report has it working once and then unavailable until a restart (iPhone 17 Pro, iOS 26). Until Apple fixes it, a restart is the reported way back

## It will not end

- Triple-click, then the Guided Access passcode. Face ID or Touch ID ends it only if you turned them on in its passcode settings
- After the iOS 26 update some reported it turning slow and the end gesture not answering; the suggested cause was the update still settling, with enough free storage and charge
- If it is stuck, a force restart ends it ("Simply force restarting iPhone should allow you to disable guided access", from an Apple community answer)

That last point is also why Guided Access is not a lock: anyone who can force restart the phone and knows its passcode is out of the app, and a session does not come back by itself.

## What holds instead

For one app, full screen, that stays put: Apple's Single App Mode, for supervised iPhones and iPads. In Apple's words it "forces the selected app to open on the supervised device and prevents the use of other apps", and the app "reopens immediately after the device is restarted". Apple Configurator turns it on from a Mac for free; it needs the device supervised, which erases it once.

For a whole phone with only some apps on it: supervision with the other apps removed, which is what Tinyphone does. The apps you did not pick are not paused behind a gesture; they are gone, the App Store is hidden, and a restart changes nothing.

| What | Guided Access | Single App Mode | A supervised iPhone (Tinyphone) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keeps the phone in | one app, for a session | one app, until it is turned off | the apps you pick |
| Through a restart | ends | the app reopens | holds |
| Turned on | on the phone, by anyone | from a Mac, supervised | from a Mac, supervised |
| Erases the phone | no | once, to supervise | once, to supervise |
| Emergency Services | not during a session | not stated on Apple's page | as on any iPhone |

## Which to use

Guided Access is right for handing your phone to a child for a game, or keeping yourself in one app for an hour: free, instant, no setup. When it has to hold without you there, through restarts and determined fingers, use Single App Mode for one app or a supervised phone for a few. The whole range of methods is in the guide.
