# Two iPhones, one number: the second-phone setup (2026)

The second-phone idea is old: a minimal phone in your pocket, the full one at home. It kept failing on one detail, the phone number. A second phone meant a second line, or moving a SIM every time you switched, so the full phone always came back. iOS 27 adds iPhone Handoff: one number on two iPhones, active on one at a time, moved with a double click. This guide is the whole setup, including the parts Apple does not do for you.

## Why the second phone kept failing

People buy a Light Phone or a Nokia, carry it for a week, and then the iPhone comes along "just for the bank app". The radius shrinks until the iPhone is back in the pocket and the dumbphone is in the drawer. Part of that is the missing apps. The other part is the number: the dumbphone had its own line, so half your calls went to a phone you were not carrying, or you swapped SIMs every morning, which nobody keeps doing.

A second iPhone fixes the apps half. Your messaging, maps, camera and banking all exist on it. What it never fixed was the number. That is what changed.

## What iPhone Handoff is

iPhone Handoff is an iOS 27 feature, first reported from the iOS 27 betas in early September 2026. You designate one iPhone as the main phone and one as the companion, in Settings under Cellular. The main phone keeps your eSIM. The companion gets a second eSIM tied to the same number. The number is active on one phone at a time: hand it to the other phone and the first one stops using it. Reports describe the transfer as a double click of the side button on the phone giving the number away.

- One number, two iPhones, active on one at a time. It does not ring on both
- Cellular settings live on the main phone only; location sharing follows whichever phone has the number
- Both phones on the same Apple account, both on iOS 27, both eSIM. Physical SIMs are not supported
- Carrier support is required. T-Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany are expected to be first; no full list exists yet, and the carrier side had not switched on when this was written
- iOS 27 means iPhone 11 or newer. Every iPhone since the XS has eSIM, so the OS is the real floor

## What it does not do, yet

- It does not make the second phone minimal. The companion is a full iPhone with the App Store on it. The moment you are bored it has everything your main phone has
- Apple has not documented how iMessage, FaceTime and an Apple Watch behave while the number is on the companion. Assume the wrist follows the phone it is paired with, and check once iOS 27 is out
- If your carrier is not on the list, none of this applies. The alternatives at the end of this page still work everywhere

## The setup

The order matters: make the second phone minimal first, then give it the number. Real supervision erases the phone once, so do that before the eSIM lands on it.

- 1. Pick the phone. The iPhone in your drawer, if it is an iPhone 11 or newer. A refurbished one works the same. Update it to iOS 27
- 2. Make it minimal. tinyphone sets it up from your Mac over a cable: it erases the phone once, then installs only the apps you chose (Messages, Maps, Music, the camera, WhatsApp, whatever your real week needs) and removes the App Store and, if you want, the browser. - 3. Add the number. On the main phone, Settings, Cellular: set up iPhone Handoff, designate the minimal phone as the companion. The carrier provisions the companion eSIM. tinyphone leaves eSIM settings open on a focus phone for exactly this reason
- 4. Switch. Double click on the phone giving the number away; the other phone picks it up. Weekend: the minimal phone goes in the pocket. Monday: the full phone gets the number back
- 5. Nothing else changes. The main phone stays yours, untouched. The minimal phone stays minimal until you change it at your Mac

## Who this is for

- People who want a real break, evenings, weekends, holidays, and still need to be reachable on their own number
- People who tried a dumbphone and stopped because of the number, not the apps
- Not for you if you want one phone. Locking down your only iPhone is simpler, needs no carrier, and works today; it is the setup this product is named for

## Without iPhone Handoff: what works on every carrier today

- A second line on the second phone. Most carriers add one for a few dollars a month; friends and family learn the second number, work keeps the first. Honest, boring, works
- A data-only eSIM on the minimal phone (a travel eSIM works fine at home) plus WhatsApp, FaceTime and iMessage over data. Calls to your number still land on the phone at home
- Call forwarding from the main phone to the minimal phone's line when you leave it behind. One setting, reversible, no carrier feature needed
- A locked-down single iPhone, which is what most people in the dumbphone communities end up recommending once they have carried two phones for a while

## Where this page stands

Everything about iPhone Handoff here comes from iOS 27 beta reporting, not from Apple's documentation, and we have not run the companion setup on a supervised phone ourselves. We will, the week iOS 27 ships, and this page changes when we know more.
