kid phone

The kid phone

A first iPhone that is safe to hand over: calls, messages, school apps, and no way to grow the rest.

Who it fits

  • A first phone, where the store, the browser and the feeds simply are not part of the deal yet
  • Kids who need a real smartphone: glucose sensors and other medical devices, school portals, transit. A basic phone is not an option for them, and an open iPhone is not either
  • After an incident, as a reset that keeps the phone useful

What stays

Calls, Messages, FaceTime, Maps, the camera and Photos, Music, school and medical apps. The phone should be one the kid is proud of, not embarrassed by.

What goes

The App Store, the browser (or everything but an approved list), the feeds, open-chat games. Adding an app later is a parent decision at the Mac.

Worth knowing

  • Screen Time workarounds are a genre kids trade openly; supervision removes the negotiation surface instead of rationing it
  • The honest limit: a determined teenager with a computer can factory-reset the phone. That is visible and wipes it; pair the lock with a conversation
  • The per-app pages for Snapchat, Roblox and TikTok cover the specific arguments
