Bark Phone vs a locked-down iPhone

Short answer: the Bark Phone is the pick when you want to know what is being said: it scans texts, photos and social media and sends you alerts. A locked-down iPhone is the pick when you would rather the risky apps were simply not on the phone, on the carrier and iPhone you already have.

The case for the Bark Phone, made properly

  • Monitoring is the point: Bark “scans texts, social media and online content and sends you alerts for potential issues”, photos and videos included
  • The controls run deep because Bark makes the phone: app approval, app time limits and schedules, website and category blocking, contact approval, blocking text deletion, location, a driving lock and remote alarms
  • It looks like any phone a teenager carries. Bark says it “looks just like any other Samsung device”, a Samsung A16, or an A37 for the Pro
  • On a phone Bark does not make, Bark says it “has to work within whatever that device’s operating system allows, so a few of those deeper controls won’t be available”. The Bark Phone is how you get all of them

Where a locked-down iPhone fits better

  • You want less on the phone rather than more watching: with supervision the apps you did not pick are gone, the App Store is hidden, and there is nothing to reinstall from
  • You want to keep your carrier: the Bark Phone needs a Bark plan, from $29 a month, and the phone is $15 a month for 24 months ($25 for the Pro), in Bark’s own words
  • Your kid has an iPhone already, or there is one in a drawer. Tinyphone is free for the first phone
  • You do not want their messages read by anyone. Tinyphone never reads them

The two do not exclude each other: Bark’s app runs on an iPhone too, within what iOS allows. Tinyphone decides what is on the phone; Bark watches what happens in the apps that stay.

The verdict

Pick the Bark Phone if alerts about what your child reads and writes matter most and you are fine with Bark’s plan. Pick a locked-down iPhone if you would rather remove the apps than monitor them, keep your carrier and phone, and keep their messages private. Plenty of families use Bark’s app on top of a phone that is already locked down.
