Music on a minimal iPhone (2026)

Short answer: music is the other direction. Almost nobody's compulsion lives in the Music app; it is one of the tools a stripped-down phone exists to protect. The interesting move is not removing it but building around it: a phone whose whole job is music, camera, maps and messages is the minimal device the community keeps describing, and the old iPhone in a drawer can become exactly that.

Why music survives every honest cleanup

Walks, gyms, commutes, falling asleep: music is what people actually reach for once the feeds are gone. The community's before-and-after posts consistently keep it. The goal was never a joyless phone; it was a phone whose pulls are all tools. Removing music for thoroughness is how minimal-phone experiments end. The WhatsApp rule applies here too: keep what your life actually uses.

The drawer iPhone as a music player

  • Take the old iPhone in the drawer, or a refurbished SE (the community's budget pick), and set it up as music, camera and maps only: no browser, no store, no feeds
  • That is a dedicated music player with your whole library. For kids it fits the pattern the community recommends: a first device to be proud of, not embarrassed by
  • The same shape works as a running phone, a travel phone, or a bedside phone. One setup, about fifteen minutes, over a cable

The Music app's own annoyances, honestly

  • The app promotes Apple Music subscriptions to non-subscribers. A supervised phone cannot remove banners inside an app (no vendor can reach inside apps), but a phone without a store cannot complete a signup impulse either
  • If you use Spotify instead, the same logic applies: keep Spotify, cut the feeds. The allowlist does not care whose music app it is
  • For Assistive Access users: inside Apple's Assistive Access mode the Music app famously only plays playlists, one of the community's documented complaints. A supervised phone runs the normal Music app in full

The honest limits

  • Downloads and library sync should be set up before removing the store if you go store-less; plan that order
  • Setup: a Mac, one erase (backed up first), and later changes take seconds at the Mac
