Wisephone vs a locked-down iPhone

Short answer: the Wisephone is a purpose-built distraction-free phone, a new device whose maker says it is designed to avoid dark patterns, with remote management by a person you trust. A locked-down iPhone does the job on the iPhone you already own, with no subscription.

The case for the Wisephone, made properly

  • Techless calls it “a simple, distraction-free phone designed to help you focus on what matters most”, running “Locked Down Android 17” with WiseOS on top
  • No web browser at all; other apps come from a Tool Drawer you can search before you buy
  • WiseOS includes Music, Calculator, Maps, Phone, Messages, Camera, Flashlight, Photos, Clock, Notes, Two-Factor Auth and Calendar
  • “Manage Wisephone remotely and choose which features you or a trusted person can access”: a commitment device with someone else holding the key
  • Techless says the phone is “designed to avoid manipulative elements”, and that your data is never sold
  • You can bring your own carrier or use theirs

Where a locked-down iPhone fits better

  • Cost: the Wisephone II is $399 plus a $39 activation fee, and every Wisephone needs a WiseOS subscription, $14 a month on your own carrier or $24 to $69 a month with Techless’s service, in Techless’s own words. An iPhone you own costs nothing more, and Tinyphone is free for the first phone
  • iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Pay and your photo library stay, because it is still your iPhone
  • You choose the apps: anything from the App Store you decide to keep (your bank, the transit app, WhatsApp), then the App Store hidden
  • With iOS 27’s iPhone Handoff, the iPhone in your drawer can carry your real number, so it can be a second phone without a second line

The verdict

Pick the Wisephone if you want a new device built from the ground up for focus, a trusted person managing it from afar, and a subscription is fine. Pick a locked-down iPhone if you would rather keep your iPhone, its apps and its accounts, pay nothing a month, and remove the rest so thoroughly the phone cannot offer it back.
