Pinwheel vs a locked-down iPhone

Short answer: Pinwheel is the most flexible of the kid phones, with several Android models, your own carrier or theirs, and hours when the phone acts like a dumb phone. A locked-down iPhone is for the family that would rather stay on iPhone and pay nothing a month.

The case for Pinwheel, made properly

  • Choice: Pinwheel sells Samsung, Motorola and Google Pixel phones, and says it has “the most options of any phone designed for kids and teens”
  • You can keep your carrier: the Caregiver Portal plan works with a plan and SIM from “any major carrier”, or Pinwheel Wireless provides the service
  • Contacts are approved one by one, and picture texts can be allowed for some contacts and not others
  • Schedules turn it into a “dumb phone” at school and overnight and open up apps and contacts at other times
  • Parents can read text messages remotely, see location with arrival and leaving alerts, and give other caregivers their own permissions
  • The Google Play Store can be turned on “except social media and adult apps”; there is no default web browser

Where a locked-down iPhone fits better

  • Your family is on iPhone: Pinwheel’s phones are Android, and a kid with an iPhone keeps iMessage, FaceTime and the family’s shared albums
  • You would rather not pay every month: Pinwheel’s plans are $17.99 a month for the Caregiver Portal or $29.99 with Pinwheel Wireless, in Pinwheel’s own words; Tinyphone is free for the first phone
  • There is an iPhone in a drawer. The old one works
  • You do not want their messages read; Tinyphone never reads them

The verdict

Pick Pinwheel if your family is happy on Android, you want dumb-phone hours and approved contacts today, and a monthly plan is fine. Pick a locked-down iPhone if the kid should stay on iPhone, you want no monthly cost, and you would rather the apps were gone than scheduled.
