What to do with an old iPhone
Short answer: an old iPhone is a better phone than most things sold to replace one. With only the apps a job needs and nothing else on it, it becomes a quiet second phone, a music player, a kid's first phone, a grandparent's phone, or your own dumb phone. Each one is a mode in Tinyphone for Mac, set up once over a cable.
Will yours work
- Any iPhone that runs iOS 18 or newer: the iPhone XS and XR and everything after
- A battery that lasts a day. A phone that only plays music or sits by a bed needs less
- No SIM is fine: on Wi-Fi it still sends iMessages, takes FaceTime calls and plays the songs on it
- Setting it up erases it once. If it is your old phone, everything on it is most likely on your new one already; if not, back it up first
1. A quiet second phone
Messages, Maps, the camera, Music, the bank, and nothing that pulls you back in. The old problem with a second phone was the number: a second line, or a SIM moved every morning. iOS 27’s iPhone Handoff lets your number live on both iPhones and move to the one you are carrying, where your carrier supports it.

2. A music player
Music, Photos and the camera, and only the songs you put on it: Apple Music’s streaming off, no browser, no App Store. An iPod again, with a better screen.
3. A kid’s first phone
Calls, Messages, FaceTime, Maps, the camera, and the apps school needs; no App Store, no browser, nothing they can change from the phone. The phone they already wanted, minus everything you were worried about.

4. A grandparent’s phone
A handful of apps laid out plainly, FaceTime with the grandchildren and the photo library kept, nothing to install by accident and no browser for scam links. Apple’s Assistive Access can turn it into big tiles; the Mac app walks you through it.

5. Your own dumb phone
Six apps, no browser, and only people can send notifications. For trying a dumb phone without buying one: if it sticks, you saved the money; if it does not, the phone is still yours.

What it takes
- A Mac and a cable for the phone
- Tinyphone for Mac, free for the first phone
- Wi-Fi during setup, about fifteen minutes in all
What it cannot do: setup erases the phone once, and a determined person with a computer can erase it back to normal. That holds fine for a child or for your own bad nights; it is not a lock for an adult set on getting out.
